VETERANS DAY – SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2012 – 11AM

Join us at Folger Park for the annual Post 8 Veterans Day Ceremony–at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of each year.

Members of our community are welcome to join us for an hour long program in Folgers Park, directly across from Post 8 and for a reception at the Post immediately following.

We are honored to announce that Major General Lepper (USAF) will speak during the ceremony and to welcome back the acclaimed United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps.

This is the Post’s signature event and has received great reviews. You don’t want to miss it.

VETERANS DAY 2011

On a brisk and windy fall morning, a crowd gathered at Folger Park for the annual Post 8 Veterans Day Ceremony–at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of the 21st century. Along with others across the U.S., we honored veterans who have and continue to serve our nation in all branches of the armed services.

Our featured guest speaker, the Honorable Charles E. Erdmann, USAF (Ret.), Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, spoke of the continued need to support our veterans both on the front and when they come home–providing jobs and services.  And our Commander, Kathryn Stillman, reminded us that behind every veteran is a village; and it is through a network of support that we accomplish our mission.

A highlight of each year is the presentation of traditional and modern patriotic musical pieces.  We were fortunate to have the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps join us again this year and to welcome two new guest singers, Pat Garvey and Reba Patterson.  Mr. Garvey sang (Still Waiting at) The Wall, and Ms. Patterson sang American the Beautiful.  The beautiful sound of bagpipes filled the opening and closing moments of the ceremony.

We were honored to have representation from all branches of the armed forces present as well as the Boy Scouts and many members of the community, such as Councilmember Tommy Wells.  And, of course, undaunted by the cold, the children ran and played throughout the park waving flags.

Special appreciation goes out to all who helped prepare for and set up the event.  Most especially, David and Danette Sheldon who organized the ceremony and Dottie Yunger, MDiv, for her thoughtful invocation and benediction–may we always choose to dance. Mr. Sheldon is the Vice Commander for Post 8 and the co-chair of the Veterans Day Commemoration.

The schedule of events, in pictures, is below.  Please also see our Veterans Day 2011 gallery for additional photographs.
